Funds raised at this event are directed to individuals & projects making a difference for women & girls in our community. We are volunteer members of the non-profit Soroptimist International Sacramento South. Our group donates to many different areas where women and girls are in need. Recently we’ve donated to Weave, My Sister’s House, CASH (Community Against Sexual Harm). We also gave grants to head of household women and Emancipated Foster Youth to further their education.

During this unexpected and challenging time of virtual reality fundraising, our club decided to make a sampler quilt of the Underground Railroad for our main fundraiser this year.

The quilt is part of the folklore of the Underground Railroad system that helped guide fleeing slaves to safe houses and eventually to the freedom of the North and Canada.

According to legend, a safe house along the Underground Railroad was often indicated by a quilt hanging from a clothesline or windowsill. These quilts were embedded with a kind of code, so that by reading the shapes and motifs sewn into the design, a person on the run could know the area’s immediate dangers or even where to head next. For example:

  • Bow Tie = Dress in disguise to appear of a higher status
  • Bear Paw = Follow an animal trail through the mountains to find water and food
  • Log Cabin = Seek shelter now, the people here are safe to speak with

We hope you might support us by purchasing raffle tickets. They are $5.00 each.
